Issey Miyake Shopping Bag
This month's shopping bag is a roundup of secondhand Issey Miyake items all at or under ~$300ish. I'm so glad you guys requested this one, even as Issey Miyake is having a "trendy" moment his impact on the design world is so singular and special and any chance to celebrate his work is a joy. Issey Miyake grew up in Japan wanting to be a dancer or athlete, but after finding his sister's fashion magazines he fell in love with fashion. But his background as someone deeply connected to body movement very much influenced his designs -- Issey Miyake focused on how to create clothing that moved, that was comfortable, that could fold and bend and crease without losing its form or getting wrinkly. He wove technology into his work beautifully, pioneering new techniques for pleating fabrics and creating clothing that was either extremely hard or extremely flexible, he also is known (beyond the pleats) for brilliant modularity -- clothes that could transform into new shapes and new uses depending on how they were worn. His famous Pleats Please line is also quite unusually size-flexible for a high-end designer, and while his pants/bottoms are unfortunately pretty limited in their waist size the tops and dresses (sized numerically) are obviously not one-size-fits-all but do actually fit a really wide range of sizes/bodies. I really want to do a deeper dive video on his work but for now, please enjoy!
